Assembly instructions

A and B = 1in. X 2in. X 54"
C and D = 1in. X 2in. X 68"

On board A make a mark, on the top, every 1/4 inch. Use a staple gun to place astaple on every mark.

Attach A and B to the inside of C and D with the "L"braces on the inside of each corner.  Attach A and B flush to the front of C and D.

From the top of A to the bottom of B should measure 64 inches.

Screw a straight brace over junctions. (C/A, A/D, D/B and C/B) joining each corner thus/\.

Stabilizing feet may be made from the 2in. X 2in.cut off pieces or larger. "T" braces are used to attach feet to the outside of C and D.

Measure 6 inches down D (from the top of A) and insert a small eye hook on the inside of the loom.

Measure 6 inches up C (from the bottom of B) and insert the second eye hook on the inside of the loom.

Run the wire from e to f making sure it is only snug enough to stay straight.

On the outside of D (e side of upright) measure 6 inches down from the top of the loom and mark.  Lay the Velcro strip at this mark and go straight down 52 inches

On A and B mark exactly every 1/4 inch starting 1 inch from the inside of D across to one inch from C. At this point one may either place a staple on top of this mark or choose to use the 1/2 finish nails to hold the warp in place. Nails are more labor intensive but the warp remains more securly in place.

Warping the Loom

Warping the loom

If you warp every 1/2 inch the weave will have about 1/4 inch separation.  Warping every quarter inch results in a tighter weave and use more yarn.

Starting at the bottom, tie the yarn around "B" one inch from the corner or on the first nail. Take the yarn and warp it over "A" placing the warp between the first two nails or staples.  Depending upon the openness of the weave, continue wrapping the yarn around boards A and B until the loom is completely warped.  There should be 104 wraps if you warp every 1/2 inch.  Attach the fishing cable, or wire in front of the warp.

To Secure the warp

Twine the warps before weavingto keep them separated and in place.  Using a length of yarn double the width of the loom divide it in half and role into a ball each end until it meets in the center. With the middle in place around the first warp thread, wrap the yarn around that first string in a figure 8 fashion, figure 8'ing all across the loom. This will be removed when done.

The next twine is placed slightly above the wire following that diagonal line.  This twine is left in the finished product.  The diagonal line is longer than A or B by approximately so 175 inches or more is needed to twine the diagonal in the same manner as the bottom except the figure 8 will progressin a spiral fashion. (see diagram)

First Weft

Go to the end of the loom where the wire lies at its lowest point on side C.  Go to the top where the yarn wraps around A and cut the warp in the middle. There are now 2 wefts.  Take one strand of yarn and cross it over the wire and begin weaving all the way across the bottom just on top of the twined line, until you reach side D.  Use a hair pick to sently align the weft.  Resist the temptation to stretch the yarn too tight.  If done right when you take the shawl off the loom it won't shrink.

Second Weft

pick up the second piece of cut yarn and cross it over the wire and again begin weaving it across the bottom.  Keep atape measure handy to make sure that you leave a 1/4 inch gap between the two wefts.  (or 1/8 inch if warped closer) Align the weft gently with your hair pick.

Third weft = to the end

Continue as you have begun.  When finished with a line of weft, gently press it against the Velcro strip to hold in place and out of the way.

When you have finished, you areready to takethe shawl off. With a pair of scissors or rolling cutter, cut the warp in half, underneath and on the bottom side of the B board. Remove the "Twine" line.  Make a fringe by gathering up 4-6 warp strings and make a half hitch knot, (or whatever else you desire) close to the weft.

Gently remove the strings from the D side and unhook the wire from one of the eyehooks.  Slide the shawl off the wire and finish tying the other side to finish off.
